Understanding SmugGateway
|
|
Your 2 minute introduction
|
|
|
|
So you have SmugGateway installed and it's all good, now how do you use it?
The good news, is that it isn't hard (hopefully). That's the point :-)
There are 2 ways you can use SmugGateway, through the Photoshop script, or as a standalone app.
The only difference is in how you start it up...
From within Photoshop as a script.
- Select the image you want to upload
- Go to File | Scripts | SmugGateway, or use your shortcut key
Looks kind of like this:
You must have selected the image you want to upload, otherwise you're going to get strange errors
A slightly scarey black console window may pop up, just ignore it:
Then the wonderful SmugGateway application will appear...
---
The other way of getting here is to run the application from the start menu, have Photoshop open and your document selected and click 'Get Image from Photoshop".
It makes basically no difference, which ever works better for you.
---
You then need to login (enter your Smugmug details in the appropiate boxes and click 'Get Album List'.
If enable remember settings, it will store these and-auto login when you next load the application. This can speed things up a fair bit, and takes another click
out of the process :-)
SECURITY NOTE: You may not want to use remember details on a shared computer where you don't trust the other people. There are technical
reasons for this. The risk of password compromise is slight, but it is there. Security will be improved in further versions. An attack against
this system would require considerable skill, but a weakness pathway does exist. To exploit it, the person needs to have login access to the
computer.
But let's not let this get out of proportion. I use remember my details, and I'm probably more paranoid than you :-)
To select an album, expand the things on the tree on the left. There are Categories, Subcategories and Albums.
Basically anything that has nothing coming off it (has no subnodes) is an album. You can only upload to albums. In a later release
visual clues will be added to make this clearer.
Optionally enter some keywords and a caption, and click upload. The following then appears:
If it doesn't work out, you'll get an error. It may well be worth just logging in again and re-trying. Smugmug's API
occasionally randomly fails for no obvious reason... I'll continue hunting this down...
If you enable shutdown on completion, you won't get a 'it worked' message, the application will just go away
if the upload succeeds. However if there's a problem, you'll get a message.
Clicking abort will agressively attempt to tear the connection down. The results are a touch on the undefined side, you'll
probably want to check afterwards what happened to the upload through a browser if you do this. In theory SmugGateway uses MD5 hashing to
prevent partially uploaded images... That's the theory anyhow...
That's all for now folks.
